Issue 007/2005

. . . would be pro same sex marriage and who would be against it. USMA won the toss and chose to be against the topic, thus, RMC was obligated to present their argument first. RMC took the stance that “The state and governing body would uphold the institution of marriage.” To achieve this, the RMC team debated that they would alter the US Constitution to only allow man/woman marriages, thereby banning same sex marriages. OCdt. 23127 Chris Bryan had seven minutes to present RMC’s opening argument, which was then refuted by an eight minute rebuttal from 2nd year cadet Joshua Swartsel. Spectators at the event said that USMA was off to a bad start right from the beginning when Cadet Swartsel began arguing the economics behind marriage, completely dodging the argument put forth by OCdt. Bryan.

OCdt. Bryan’s argument was further reinforced by an eight minute rebuttal from OCdt. 23128 Rhea Burke. OCdt Burke skilfully dismantled Army’s argument, putting the win for RMC within reach. Pleeb (1st Year) Cadet Mitchell Sulivan made a last ditch effort to salvage USMA’s argument with another eight minute presentation. Finally, each side had four minutes to present closing arguments. OCdt. Bryan secured RMC’s victory with his powerful and convincing closing argument. The final score: RMC 2, Army 1. Congratulations to the debate team for bringing home the only victory of the weekend.
