Traditional scalpels are dangerous to medical staff because the exposed blades are difficult to remove.

"The beauty of the blade is that it comes out easily and it retracts," said Dr. Mike Bell, a plastic surgeon in Ottawa. "You can hand them something that is not dangerous."

Lee used to make hand tools at Lee Valley Tools that were popular with woodworkers.

Bell, a surgeon, called the device "the world's best wood carving knife" and "world's best scalpel."

One day, Bell called Lee, and the inventor decided to make scalpels full time at his new company, Canica Design.

"There's a big demand for this type of product now," agreed the scalpel's designer, Tim Maxwell.

Canica is now one of the largest suppliers of scalpels in the U.S.
