Colonel W.S. Werny was born in High Prairie, Alberta on 12
July 1951. He
attended Royal
Roads in Victoria, British Columbia and the Royal Military
College in Kingston, Ontario graduating in 1974 with a
Bachelor of Science degree. His professional military
education includes the Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff
College in 1980 and the Canadian Forces Command and Staff
College in 1985.
Colonel Werny received his pilot's wings in 1975 at Moose Jaw,
Saskatchewan. He then transitioned on to helicopters and
received his operational training on the CH135 Twin Huey in
Gagetown, New Brunswick.
His first operational tour was with 422 Tactical Helicopter
Squadron in Gagetown from 1975 to 1979. He then served as an
instructor and operations officer on 403 Helicopter
Operational Training Squadron, also in Gagetown, until 1982.

Colonel
Werny served his first staff tour in St. Hubert, Quebec as a
member of the Headquarters 10 Tactical Air Group. He fulfilled
the positions of Staff Officer Air Reserve and Personal
Assistant to the Commander 10 TAG until his promotion to Major
in 1983 when he assumed the duties of Staff Officer
Operations. |
Following
one year in Toronto on the Command Staff College, Colonel
Werny was posted to 444 Squadron in Lahr, West Germany in 1986
where he assumed the duties of Deputy Commanding Officer. In
June 1989 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and assumed
command of Base/3 Wing Operations of Canadian Forces Base Lahr
3 Wing. On his return to Canada in 1991 he attended the
Continuous French Language Course in Ottawa.
In July,
1992 Colonel Werny returned to Gagetown and assumed command of
403 Helicopter Operations Training Squadron. He relinquished
his command in July, 1994 and moved to Winnipeg where he
assumed the responsibilities of the Senior Staff Officer Plans
until April 1995 and then as the Executive
Assistant
to the Commander of Air Command.

In June 1996 Colonel Werny was promoted to his present rank
and in July 1996 he assumed command of the Canadian Contingent
of the Multi -National Force and Observers (MFO) in El Gorah,
Egypt. Within the MFO he fulfilled
the
position of Chief of Operations and Liaison. On completion of
his tour in July 1997 he returned to Winnipeg and 1 Canadian
Air Division Headquarters where he filled the position of
A1 Personnel.
On 30 July
1998, he took over as the Commanding Officer of the Aerospace
Engineering Test Establishment, located at 4 Wing Cold Lake,
Alberta.
