Who Is It?

1.     She was born in London, England.

2.     She was with the first group of 32 ladies who marched through the RMC Arch, 30 Aug 1980.

3.     Her first memories of RMC were of being unloaded off buses in the dark in front of the dorms. There were
fourth years everywhere yelling at the new arrivals to grab their bags and get into the dorms. It was total confusion and she remembers thinking it was worse than Basic Training.

4.    She spent her fair share of time running circles for punishment during "Rook Term"; an activity that she was convinced was designed to waste time during the valuable hours after study and before bedtime.

5.    Her saddest day at RMC was Graduation in 1984 when her original classmates left the College for good. The  happiest was on Convocation in 1985 when she finally received her degree.

6.    She remained at RMC for the summer after graduation to work as a Professor's Assistant in the Mech Eng Dept was a great summer, sailing on Wednesdays and writing a user manual for the new RMC mainframe computer.

7.   "First Year was very difficult for the entire College. Media attention was high and a certain number of cadets were opposed to the introduction of female cadets."

8.    Overall, RMC was an incredible positive experience for her. Although she was glad to graduate and leave the milcol environment, she would love to return to RMC as DCadets or in another senior position.

9.    She did Post-Graduate training in Virginia where she earned a Masters degree in Integrated Logistic Support.

10.  She was promoted to her current rank in June 2004.

Reunion Weekend

Club Executive Director, Peter Dawe, has been hard at work over the past year ensuring the 2005 Reunion Weekend is a winner for all returning Ex Cadets.  The Dinner and Dance (Field House) plus the Old Brigade Dinner (SAM) will be catered at a level never before experienced for these type of functions.

We have assembled a support staff to help take care of the mundane, behind the scene but essential tasks if these types of events will be successful.  We are confident that no stone will be left unturned, thereby, guaranteeing all those in attendance a great time.

Class of 1995 -  Looking to Honour Their Three Fallen Comrades Reunion Weekend

The Class of 1995 (RMC, CMR, RRMC) is belatedly organizing some activities for Ex-Cadet Weekend - Our 10th Anniversary.  As always the RMC Club is organizing another excellent weekend.  The events outlined below will be unique to our Class.

We are taking this opportunity in e-Veritas to assess the number of classmates that intend to come to Kingston for the weekend and participate in the festivities.  The objective is to also start gathering contact information for our class, so that we can attempt to stay in touch better and plan for these milestones in the future.

In addition to the events organized by the Club for all Ex-Cadets, the additional Class of 95 events are as follows:

Sept. 30th at 6:00P p.m. - Mix & Mingle, Upstairs at the Kingston Brew Pub, 34 Clarence St.

Oct. 1st - Timing and Location TBA, Class Meeting

Oct. 2nd - Timing TBA, Memorial Staircase ceremony

As you know, the Class of 1995 has already experienced some tragic losses from among our ranks.  Julie MacKenzie, Chris Saunders and Miles Selby were all killed in active service of their country.  During ex-cadet weekend, Chris and Miles will have their pictures added to the memorial staircase.  We are also trying to get in touch with close friends of our fallen comrades that are intending to come to Ex-Cadet weekend.  Please spread the word regarding this effort, so we can get in touch with them.  Thanks for your help and hope to see you in Kingston!

Please send me an email with your contact information and confirm with me exactly which events you plan to attend.  You will then receive more detailed information about these events in advance of the reunion weekend.

Update: Four Ladies from Royal Military College Exceed 10k Goal

GOAL: $10,000

AT PRESS TIME: $10,866.14
achieved and still counting!

Well done to the four RMC ladies who took on the challenge to raise $10k over the summer and to walk 60 kms over two days in September.

Thanks also in no small part to many e-Veritas readers who generously donated to The Weekend to End Breast Cancer Event.

All four ladies concede without your help they would have had a much tougher struggle in reaching their goal. Your support to this project is very, very much appreciated.

Teri Share; Amanda Jayne; Amanda Bruni; & Michelle Whitty all should be proud (we are) of their tremendous fund-raising accomplishment.

Well done ladies, the first 32 would be proud!

8 no 28

Memories of Nijmegen 2005 go far beyond the blisters
By Kristina Davis    Maple Leaf, 10 August 2005, Vol. 8, No. 28

Sometimes the most poignant moments come from unexpected places. One night, during Nijmegen 2005, Colonel (Ret) Murray Johnston, the former colonel commandant of the Electrical Mechanical Engineering Branch, met a local Dutchman.

His name, though, did not sound Dutch. In fact, it sounded Canadian and it was. Named for the Canadian soldier, who died in his families’ front yard during the Second World War, Paul Gabriel Caron’s relatives still looked after the gravesite of his namesake.

5909 Ted King Receives USCG Award

5909 Ted King (RMC 63) with his wife Kerry in attendance receing his award.Ted was one of the original pioneers of the SARSAT (Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking) program and was directly involved in the first Canadian rescue, and the first American marine rescue back in 1982.

Following his retirement from DND in 1995, Ted began working part time for Science Systems and Applications Incorporated (SSAI) in the United States, while continuing to live in Prince Edward County, Ontario.

20746-4304

Dear Mr. King,

On behalf of the U.S. Coast Guard, I would like to extend to you our heartfelt thanks for your critical assistance to the Coast Guard in rescuing two persons clinging to the overtumed hul1 of the M/V Extractor on June l1th, 2005 off of Ft. Pierce, FL..

Prior to your direct involvement in the SAR case, the Coast Guard perfomed 17 different aircraft sorties in an effort to locate the source of an unregistered EPIRB alert that was activated almost 24 hours earlier. As the watchstander at the United State Mission Coordination Center, your intervention to assist Seventh Coast Guard District SAR Controllers was critical. in identifying key SARSAT data that allowed them to readjust their search areas based upon more relevant EPIRB alert data.

As a result of your actions, the Coast Guard re-directed a C-13 0 to the revised search area and soon located the survivors clinging to the hull of the vessel. Were it not for your advice, we may not have located the individuals in distress in time to assure their survival. This is a shining example of the outstanding support that we regularly receive from MCC watchstanders while conducting SAR operations involving EPIRB alerts. .

Once again, thank you for assistance. Since you have recently retired, .I wish you and your family the very best in all your future endeavors..

Sincerely

Captain, U. S. Coast Guard

Where are they now?
What are they doing?

From time to time, E-Veritas will focus on an Ex cadet; former staff member; and / or a friend of the college. Articles will be reproduced in the language received and in most cases not translated.  We invite readers to submit articles to william.oliver@rmc.ca in the language of their choice.

  We get e-mails . . .

Bill,

I have just read the August 2005 e-veritas. Well done again! I printed the whole thing out this time - all 24 pages of it. Both Joan and I read it with great interest. It was full of all sorts of interesting College/Club related items. It can be a great recruiting device for the Club and Foundation. One direct result of this e-veritas is that Joan and I are now signed up for the Legacy dinner in September.

On the Nijmegen Marches article there were a couple of points on which I would like to comment. The first is that I don't think that this is the first time that RMC has entered a team in the Marches. I think that that honour goes to the 1994 and 1995 Marches when #8684 LCol (now BGen(Retd)) Peter Holt  lead the RMC teams when he was the College's Administrative Officer. He subsequently became the long time Nijmegen Team Commander. But his action in having RMC send a team in those two years kept the CF's participation in the Marches alive during those tough years of transition after the closure of CFE and for that, inter alia, he was inducted into the CF Sports Hall of Fame.

General Romses name (misspelled once) is a also a War Studies Graduate of RMC and, more importantly, like General Fenton has a college number. I suggest that it is important to include the numbers of folks like this. It is a way of making them feel more at home in the Club and hence more willing to become Club members.

See you and Rolande at the Legacy Dinner and Reunion Weekend.

3550 Murray C Johnston (Colonel ret’d)

BGen (Ret’d) Peter Holt fondly referred to as General Nijmegen Marches by many military personnel who appreciate all the hard work he has done over the years to keep this event in the forefront.

We regret the errors.  Of course, we should have recalled both the 1994 & 95 Marches headed by 8684 Peter Holt.  All who have known about Nijmegen over the years are fully aware of his tremendous contribution to this very popular annual international event.

We are also aware that in 2004 Peter was deservingly inducted into The CF Sports Honour Roll. The Honour Roll was initiated in 1987 to recognize outstanding sports performances.  For more:

http://www.cfpsa.com/en/psp/sports/honour_roll.asp

Our sincere apology to General Romses for the spelling miscue.  We’ll continue to try to do better.

Extra Innings

Congratulations and Happy 25th Anniversary to the current and all former lady cadets who ever attended CMR, RRMC or RMC.  It was 25 years ago, August 30, 1980, that the first 32 females marched through the arch at RMC. Our aim for this edition was to “pay our dues” to this water-shed event in the history of the military colleges.

The Club & Foundation staffs at Panet House have been working hard (and smart) to update their data-base. In this regard we have come up with three different lists. Please look it over and see what (if any) list your name appears.  Contact rmcclub@rmc.ca if you have any questions / concerns.

Finally, for those who are not current Life / Annual or Associate members of the Club.  Is it not time?

The eVERITAS electronic Newsletter reaches over 5,000 readers . It is a service provided by the RMC Club for Members in good standing with current addresses in the data base.  It is designed to provide timely information on current events at RMC and to keep Members "connected".  Occasionally, it will be distributed to non-members to entice them to join or renew their membership.  Membership information is available at www.rmcclub.ca

Newsworthy articles from national or local papers that may not have been available to the majority of our readers may be reproduced in e-VERITAS.  We will also publish articles in either official language as submitted by Cadets and Staff, on "current life" at RMC.  Other short “human interest stories" about Cadets, Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff at the College will appear from time-to-time.  Readers of e-VERITAS are encouraged to submit articles in either official language to william.oliver@rmc.ca.  In particular, up-to-date “Where are they now?” articles on Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff would be most welcome.

eVERITAS is intended as a supplement and not a replacement of Veritas, the highly popular magazine of the RMC Club printed and distributed three times a year to Members by mail.
