Quotation of the Week

“ The RMC Club is more than a Old Boys’ Fraternity.  In its concern for the College, the maintenance of traditions and the welfare of cadets and ex-cadets, it can perform many useful services.  One day in the not-too-distant future, you will be one of the old soldiers in blue blazers marching through the rows of scarlet.  And then Ex-cadet Weekend will seem more than worthwhile.”

13240  III Year Officer Cadet Dave Last – Excerpt from an Article: The Arch
(One of Canada’s top Canmilcol papers)  December 1979.

What's Happening Around the College?

Cadets marching off the parade square on their way to the Memorial Arch

Kingston and area enjoyed sunny and reasonably mild weather for this time of year for the Remembrance Day parade.  Cadets, staff, Ex cadets and friends of the college all met at The Memorial Arch to pay their respects.  Following the ceremony the traditional light lunch and hot cider was served at the RMC Senior Staff Mess.  This event was well attended too.

Our trusted camera-man on his first assignment with his wife’s new digital was observed awkwardly taking pictures.  Click here for more RMC Remembrance Day photos.

RMC Captures Tournament Cup

RMC Fencing Champs
(click on picture for larger view)

November 5th and 6th 2005 the two RMC Varsity Fencing Teams hosted the 36th Annual RMC Invitational Team Fencing Tournament.  This long standing event has been a favorite in the fencing community for decades, and since the building of the new KMCSC Field House, has become a draw for hundreds of athletes from dozens of clubs including the British Combined Services and West Point Military Academy.

The plan for the weekend involved 36 hours of cadet labour to set up and run the tournament, working together as a disciplined team, hosting West Point, and trying to perform with the best fencing possible.  Teams and individuals were shooting to achieve personal best performances and to better their standings from previous years.  The result at the end of the day was beyond what anyone would have envisioned.  After 22 years, the combined efforts of all the RMC A teams in foil, epee and sabre for both the men’s and women’s teams, culminated in the RMC fencers winning the overall tournament cup.  This feat was last accomplished in 1983 and only twice before in 1977 and 1978.

Reunion Weekend Golf

Mixed foursome champions and tournament champions
Lois Ross, Julie Tuepah, Graeme Ross and Bruce Russell

The Class of 1970 hosted the first annual Royal Military Colleges Club of Canada Foundation Fall Golf Classic at St. Lawrence Golf Club on Friday September 30th.  This event, which was held for all returning five year reunion classes, hopefully will become an annual event during Alumni weekend.  Ray Hook from the Class of 1971 has volunteered to carry the torch next year and hold the second event on the Friday of Alumni Weekend.

This year's tournament featured 54 golfers who survived cool temperatures in the low 50's and winds that gusted up to 25 kmph during the course of the round.  Both all male foursomes and mixed foursomes competed for prize table "goodies" purchased with funds raised from a number of hole sponsors who each paid a modest amount to tout their services or support to the event.

The lowest gross score in the scramble format was achieved by a mixed foursome captained by none other than Graeme Ross, a former RMC golf team from the Class of 1970.  Graeme teamed up with his wife Lois and a former RMC golf team member Bruce Russell and his wife Julie Tuepah.  This group of hustlers scored an impressive 5 under par during quite trying conditions and beat out three all male foursomes who all tied at 4 under.  Through a retrogression formula known only to Bill Simmons, one of the event chairs, the second Class of 1970 team composed of Bob Sochasky, Rick Lancaster, Jim Simpson and Scott King finished second in the event and was forced to pay homage to the talented team ahead of them in the final standings.

Third place in the event went to a team from the Class of 1985 (Randy Boucher, Mike Colpitts, Brad Gable and

Rob Doucette) and fourth place to another competitive team from the Class of 1970 (Jeff Holt, Brian Hope, Peter Brett and Don Peterson)

St. Lawrence Golf Club was in great shape for such a late event and all of the participants enjoyed an afternoon of fun and camaraderie.  Both Bill Simmons and I wish to thank all of our event and hole sponsors listed below for their support and hope that our hard pioneering work of 2005 results in an annual event that continues to grow in popularity over the coming years.

ÉLÈVE-OFFICIER D'UN JOUR
6-7 Novembre 2005

From RMC, to a golfing paradise

9699 Chris Ouimet (RMC '73) Glacier Greens Manager

It may be a bit of a stretch but if there is such a thing as an RMC sports icon, then 9699 CC (Chris) Ouimet would fit the bill.  In our (on & off) 40 plus years association with RMC sports, there are many cadet athletes that stick out in our mind as being “special” – none more “special” than this gentleman.  We didn’t get to see him play much on a regular basis while he was a cadet, however, we saw enough and especially over the 25 years or so when he was an officer in the Canadian Forces to realize that he would be an All Star in any era and at any collegiate level.

On our last trip to Comox BC on Vancouver Island, we ran across Major (ret’d) Chris.  He graduated from RMC in 1973 after an outstanding 4-year sports career.  He was captain of both the varsity soccer and hockey teams and won several top athlete awards.  Upon graduation, he began his military career in Chatham NB as an AI navigator on 416 Sqn. flying backseat in CF101 fighters.  After a 4-year tour, he returned to RMC as #2 Squadron Commander and assistant coach of the varsity hockey team; with Tom MacKay; John Toupin; and Greg Peet.

Three years later, he decided to make a career change to the (PERO) Physical Education & Recreation Branch.  He spent a couple of years in recruiting in Sudbury until the “paper-work” was completed and he was posted to North Bay as the BPERO.  From N.B. he went to Cold Lake and then was promoted to Major and posted to NDHQ Ottawa to lead the CF Sports program, both national and international (CISM).  He then moved to Winnipeg as the Air Command PERO until the PE&R branch was “stood down” in 1997.  He remained in Winnipeg for the next 8 years working for PSP initially and later as a Reservist responsible for the Professional Development of all Air Force personnel.

Chris continued his sports career in the military by winning numerous CF National hockey and Old Timers hockey championships. A powerful skater, he had a polished air of composed confidence that made him a natural leader both on and off the ice. Admired and very much respected by  teammates and his opponents. He had the knack of making his linemates play at a level higher then they were accustomed. The result winning teams!

On the professional career side, he has also been directly involved with developing the CISM volleyball and golf programs. He is a CISM Order of Merit Recipient - Knight (1994). Presently, he is the secretary of the Technical Committee responsible for

the conduct of the annual CISM World Military Golf Championship.  Since his days at RMC, Chris, has always been able to juggle a whole lot of activities successfully concurrently.

Last summer, Chris and his wife Nan, who is a Nurse by profession, and who he met while she was undergoing training when he was an Officer Cadet at RMC, decided to move to the west coast to get away from the Winnipeg winters. They had a beautiful house built facing the mountain range.  As fate would have it, the job of Manager for the 19 Wing Comox golf course (Glacier Greens) became vacant around the time, when they arrived and he applied for the position and won the competition.  He has only been at the Comox Club for a year, but has already left his mark in upgrading the course and clubhouse facilities. While we were out there last Spring, we attended the AGM of the Glacier Greens membership. The main topic on the agenda was the drainage and poor winter conditions of the course.  Since that time, major improvements have been made and from all reports, golfers no longer require “rubber boots” to walk the fairways after prolonged heavy rain storms.

When we asked him how he liked living on an island, he responded with: “Love it - where else in Canada can you golf, ski and fish all in the same day?”

Golf enthusiasts, should check out Glacier Greens.  It is open for play all year round and the new half million-dollar drainage system, we spoke about earlier has just been completed to improve winter play. The course is located right next to the Comox airport and getting there is quick and easy with West Jet providing 2 direct flights daily from Calgary.

Golfers and even the duffers, especially those looking for a break during the cold winter months, who usually head “south”, would be wise indeed if, they were to take a look at the website www.glaciergreens.com

Better yet, give Chris a call at (250) 339-8016 or manager@glaciergreens.com   He manages the Golf Course with Class - like the way - he played sports at RMC and in the CF.

  We get e-mails . . .

Rear Admiral Desmond Piers.

It is not surprising that the passing of one of Canada’s greatest admirals has unleashed a fund of reminiscences. I recall our first meeting.

I was president of the Nova Scotia Branch of the RMC Club a number of years ago. A football game had been organized between Dalhousie University and RMC to take place in Halifax. I arranged to have a number of the local senior officers join the Commandant , who had accompanied the team, and take in the game.

It was pointed out to me, not long after it started, that Admiral Piers had driven in from Chester and rather than join the brass had elected to sit with the cadets on the far side of the field. I hastened over and invited him to join us, which he declined, and invited him to join the group for drinks and possibly dinner at my nearby house, after the game, which he accepted.

I hastened to my car after the game and rushed to the house so that I could get the ice cubes and greet my guests. I was not fast enough. Admiral Piers had arrived before me to be greeted by my son. The latter, to my amazement, had dressed in a jacket and tie, although only about 12 years old. The Admiral said his name was ‘Debbie’, and that he supposed  that drinks had been laid out, etc. My son assured him that that was the case. Debbie then advised him that he was to be the bartender, and that he, Debbie, would be the waiter.

It was at this point that I arrived. My apologies were cut short, and as I headed for the ice cubes, cold wine and water, I was ordered to go back to the door. Debbie would not take no for an answer. He and Christopher would serve the drinks, my job was to greet my guests. He took off his jacket, put a serviette over his arm and sent me on my way.

He took all the drink orders, refused to tell Christopher how to pour the drinks, but did indicate which was the scotch and which was the gin. It turned into one great party. Admiral Piers was always ‘Debbie’ to my son from that day. One young boy, and his father, never forgot that lesson in leadership.

This past year I have had the occasion to visit both the International Hockey Hall of Fame in Kingston and the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.  I could not find any RMC memorabilia.  Do you know if any has ever been offered to these two establishments?  If not then I think we should certainly be represented.

We had the opportunity to spend some time in Ottawa on the weekend. Is there a prettier capital city in November anywhere else in the world? One of our stops was the new War Museum.  We took in the WW II musical, “Till We Meet Again”. Great, great show!

If you have not already done so, you may want to check out the CBC: INDEPTH: CANADA'S MILITARY - Canadian Forces in the 21st century

As mentioned elsewhere on this page, the November edition of the Veritas magazine should be in Canada Post mail boxes within a couple of weeks.  There is still a ton of e-Veritas readers (and others) still not “paid-up” as Club members.  Folks, we really do need your support.

The eVERITAS electronic Newsletter reaches over 5,000 readers . It is a service provided by the RMC Club for Members in good standing with current addresses in the data base.  It is designed to provide timely information on current events at RMC and to keep Members "connected".  Occasionally, it will be distributed to non-members to entice them to join or renew their membership.  Membership information is available at www.rmcclub.ca

Newsworthy articles from national or local papers that may not have been available to the majority of our readers may be reproduced in e-VERITAS.  We will also publish articles in either official language as submitted by Cadets and Staff, on "current life" at RMC.  Other short “human interest stories" about Cadets, Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff at the College will appear from time-to-time.  Readers of e-VERITAS are encouraged to submit articles in either official language to william.oliver@rmc.ca.  In particular, up-to-date “Where are they now?” articles on Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff would be most welcome.

eVERITAS is intended as a supplement and not a replacement of Veritas, the highly popular magazine of the RMC Club printed and distributed three times a year to Members by mail.
