Marian Miszkiel and Doug Foreman, and just some of their U.N. experiences (cont'd)

Everything is near the Nile River and low wire entanglements protect against various wildlife and humans including a 5 to 6 meter SNAKE which got caught with the camera after having its dinner!!!!

The area was demined with the Sudan SUV (South African Mine Clearing Vehicle named the Tapir).  Marian was on site to prepare subdivision plans for a number of accommodation and logistics bases/cities/camps of up to 2500 military and UN staff each.  The north/west of Sudan is Saharan Africa with desert and drought and the south, Juba, is the heart of Africa with the Nile River joining the rich lands.

The site in Juba was a virgin field beside the airport and Marian surveyed a 2 square kilometer area for a 2500 person town and mentioned to the people in the huts that they were the UN, and they were there to help.  Unfortunately, he was instructed by his superiors to tell them that they had to leave their homes (huts) so a new road could be built!

In the western Sahara, south of Morocco, the second longest military fortification in history (a 1200 km sand and mined wall believed to be second only to the Great Wall of China) separates the Polisario and Moroccan Armies and 11 UN Observer team sites, administration, logistics and political complexes.  The best way to get around is in a MI-8 Helicopter!!

Kosovo peace lasted from summer 1999 until March 2004 at which time the Kosovan riots claimed some lives and Serbian minority enclaves were targeted and many homes burned – Prizren example.

Former Yugoslavian Bank Bankkos Building in Central Pristina damaged by a collateral cruise missile targeted at an adjoining PTK (Post Telecom Kosovo – read Serbian Military installation in 99) Telecommunications complex in 1999

Restored, FINALLY to be the Prime Minister’s offices and Ministry of Finance and Economy.  Both Doug Foreman, Chief of Engineering Design and Marian Miszkiel working in the new Kosovo government, helped with the project planning and Doug kicked it into high gear in 2003 with a Design/Build concept that few in the Balkans had ever heard of.
