Issue 032/2005

Bob Booth,
RMC Club President.

This is the last edition of Veritas assembled by our long-serving editor 5611 LCdr Gerry Stowe, CD (RMC).  Part of giving thanks to Gerry for all that he’s done for the RMC family, both inside and outside the covers of Veritas, includes an opportunity to recognize the role the magazine itself plays in keeping us informed about what the larger College ‘family’ is up to.

On Gerry’s watch, Veritas became much more than an announcement board updating the goings-on and whereabouts of our classmates.  Through its pages we hear many stories of RMC family members contributing locally, nationally and internationally, bringing honour to our nation and to the College.

Many of these stories are major news items we are familiar with – stories of astronauts and space exploration; generals leading international operations; veterans forcing the change of law to bring equity and fairness to those injured in the line of duty; and sadly too, accounts of the final acts of (yes, we do say it) “truth, duty and valour” of our classmates who gave their lives in the service of Canada.

But Veritas brings us much more than background to the newsworthy stories.  And it is these other stories that remind us of the common values and interests we take from being part of the RMC family.  These tales,

few of which make the headlines, demonstrate the involvement of those who have experienced the uniqueness of Canada’s only national university – whether through Royal Roads, CMR, or RMC.  Stories like:
  • RMC professors who are world class researchers and inventors;

  • the Cadets who are called one day to the streets of eastern Ontario to help those caught in an ice storm, and the next day to Parliament Hill for the swearing-in of a new Governor General;

  • the RMC Club Branch that brings in serving Cadets to deliver a local community leadership award honouring other Canadian heroes; and

  • the Ex-Cadets who volunteered to do the heavy lifting for Canada’s new War Museum.

This is just a glimmer of the variety of stories Veritas covered under Gerry’s guidance.  It is my honour to bring to all our readers this glimpse into Gerry Stowe’s capabilities as editor of Veritas.  He has served the RMC family in the same tradition as those appear in the pages of our great magazine.  Thank You, Gerry, for your skill and dedication.
