RMC Hits Moon
Flashback from the Archives

Friendship 7.
On February 20, 1962, John H. Glenn, Jr., became the
first American to orbit the Earth.
This was six days following the bold headline, “RMC Hits Moon” in The Marker.

44 years later, BAR comes clean!

Thank you for your query about my article "RMC Hits Moon" from the 14 Feb 1962 edition of The Marker. I wonder how I could have forgotten having written such deft and insightful sophomoric prose, filled as it is with sardonic irony and perfectly apt topical references to life as an RMC cadet of the era. Yet it does have my number and initials on it.  I was then in 2nd year Math and Physics and no doubt we budding young scientists were all atwitter over the first orbit of the Earth in April 1961by Russian Yuri Gagarin and the sub-orbital rides by Americans Alan Shepard the following month and Gus Grissom's in the July.  (Thank you, Lord, for Google.)  Perhaps we had heard all about plans for John Glenn's upcoming Mercury 6 launch aboard Friendship 7 which occurred on 20 February and we on The Marker just had to scoop it!

By the way credit should go to photographer Recruit Harold Merklinger for his picture of a truly ancient artifact, a pentode electronic valve, standing in for the space rocket.

What's Happening Around the College?

RMC Cadets On Exchange

During this past term six cadets packed up their gear and headed south.  Two each to: West Point; Annapolis; and the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.  The cadets were kind enough to share some of their experiences.

In a recent edition of e-Veritas (6 December 2005, Issue #31) there was a section that featured an article from the 1985 version of The Arch entitled 63 Things II Cadets Would Like to See at RMC. Item number eight was patent leather. This past semester I had the opportunity to spend the semester at a military academy where patent leather was the norm and I was the odd man out with real leather shoes that required more than just a squirt of Windex to keep them gleaming. Myself and OCdt Nick Lussier-Nivischiuk spent an incredible five months at the United States Military Academy, West Point as part of a recent exchange program between RMC and USMA.

RMC HOSTS WATERPOLO TOURNAMENT AND CAPTURES BRONZE
By II, 24110 Officer Cadet John Wernham

On Saturday, 14 Jan, the RMC Water Polo club hosted its second tournament. The last one was held in the 2003/04 academic year, and unfortunately no tournament was held last season. This year the club has resumed activities in the interest of increasing the profile of water polo at RMC and competing with other clubs from Ontario.

All participants viewed the tournament as a success, with the Ottawa Titans entering 2 teams, the Toronto Triggerfish entering 2 teams, the RMC Water Polo Club entering 2 teams, and the Sudbury Gators rounding out the roster with their team. At the end of the day the Titans' teams managed to capture the gold and silver, with one of the RMC teams taking bronze and the other RMC team placing 4th. As often happens with water polo, some injuries were sustained, most importantly a concussion to the head of OCdt Aaron Corey of 7 Sqn. He was taken to the KGH and has recovered completely.

Congratulations and thanks to all those who made the tournament possible.

RMC bronze medal winners!

Continuing a legacy of leadership
By Corinne Deshaw

Kathleen Birchall is determined to carry on the amazing legacy of her deceased husband, 2364 Leonard Birchall, Class of ’37. Mrs. Birchall gives regularly to the RMC Foundation in his memory. “I do it for my husband’s sake because of my love and admiration for him as a graduate of RMC.”

Born in St. Catharine’s Ontario, the distinguished Air Commodore’s life story is legend in Air Force circles. A former RMC Commandant, he is the only person to carry five clasps on his Canadian Forces Decoration (CD), in recognition of 67 years of service.

Air Commodore Leonard Birchall was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and had the title “Saviour of Ceylon” bestowed upon him by Sir Winston Churchill. He earned the title for alerting Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) about incoming Japanese invaders during a reconnaissance flight in April 1942. He and his crew were shot down and interned in a Japanese POW camp until the end of the war. Birchall endured unimaginable torture, starvation, disease and three execution attempts, including two firing squads and an attempted beheading. In one example of his leadership he directed all of his fellow officers to refuse their own food until the enlisted men had eaten first.

Air Commodore Birchall passed away in Kingston in September 2004, and his widow is still moved to tears when she is asked about her former husband. Mrs.

Birchall comments on his legacy. “I think he is a shining example of what a cadet can become,” she says. “Not only for cadets but for everyone.”

Kathleen Birchall shares one of her most poignant memories of her late husband. “There are many things on the record about former POWs.  For example, people will often ask a survivor about what carried you through and how did you survive,” she recounts. After being married to Air Commodore Birchall for a couple of years Mrs. Birchall dared to ask him an important question. “What was it that carried you through the torture, the terrible decisions and the awful years?”

Mrs. Birchall notes that many men often say it was a belief in God that carried them through. But she didn’t know what the Air Commodore’s answer would be. She says he looked out and stared into space for a while, and then he said. “It was my training at RMC. It was my training in those early formative years.” Mrs. Birchall believes that simple statement was the greatest tribute that anyone can give to an institution.

Even after her husband’s passing, Kathleen Birchall continues to be one of the top donors to the RMC Foundation. For the last couple of years she has been a member of the New Eighteen Society. Each year the Birchall Bursary supports exchange students to the U.S. Air Force Academy. Mrs. Birchall also funds a Post-Secondary Education Scholarship for members of the Air Cadet League of Canada.

When asked if she had any advice for current RMC officer cadets, Mrs. Birchall quoted Shakespeare, “To thine own self be true.”

Three Ex cadets meet up in London!

A special meeting of the RMC Club was held in London, England on Dec. 1, 2005. Dr. John Mason (8840) (middle) class of 1971 showed the proper respect for senior classmen, Dr. Les Bennett (8384) (left) and Mr. Patrick Tighe (8593) (right), both of the class of 1970. Although the meeting was unplanned - all three were attending an annual dinner hosted by three nuclear organizations), a full agenda was developed and many important issues discussed and resolved.

Minutes will be distributed to the Club Executive Board in due time!

All three RMC graduates agreed to meet again at some unspecified future time and place.

We Salute!  The Marker Staff - 1961-62.

Regular readers of e-Veritas will notice that we often reuse articles from days gone by.  In particular, our Flashback from the Archives stories will often have originated from the The Marker – The Unofficial Newspaper of the Gentlemen Cadets of the Royal Military College of Canada.  The Marker was started some time shortly following the reopening of the college in 1948 until well into the 1970s.

We are indeed fortunate to have in our possession a number of The Marker editions between 1950 and 1962. We are far from reading all of them and although we do not have a professional eye – the stories; layout; and apparent interest to the readers of the day is impressive. The humour, subtle wit and the quality of the cartoons and some articles poking fun at “rooks”; “seniors”; and the “staff” (no group seemed to be spared) always appeared to be in good taste and reflective of the character of these cadet journalist. They certainly did not have to go “underground” with their views. They combined courage with class!

As we mentioned we haven’t read all of them but at this time we would like to salute The Officer Cadets who comprised the editorial staff of The Marker, 1961-62 school year.

Où sont-ils?  Que font-ils?

Where are they now?  What are they doing?

From time to time, E-Veritas will focus on an Ex cadet; former staff member; and / or a friend of the college. Articles will be reproduced in the language received and in most cases not translated.  We invite readers to submit articles to william.oliver@rmc.ca in the language of their choice.

  We get e-mails . . .

I was reading your E-mail Veritas (January 18) out here in sunny Arizona and noted some glaring discrepancies in your "Flashback from the archives". This flashback had to do with the dropping of the football from an airplane into the Queen's football stadium.

There were four people in the airplane (a red and white Piper tripacer rented from the Kingston Flying Club).  I was the pilot and the passengers were Ted Newman, Stan Rolsky and an army staff officer Captain Bobinski.  The stolen football was painted red and white with RMC on it and had a red and white parachute and contrary to the report in Veritas, it did not land inside the stadium but just outside the fence.  We also dropped a lot of coloured flyers that said "Happy Quarathon - Here's your ball back!  Beat Toronto!"

Surprisingly, I did get to have a nice chat with the commandant but was not reprimanded nor demoted.  The experience must have helped my flying because after I graduated I flew Voodoos in the RCAF and then flew as a Captain for American Airlines for 34 years.

We did a random check of the Club Data Base last week and were surprised to note just how many e-mail addresses we do not have. This includes members and non-members of the Club.  For example, e-Veritas notices can only be sent to those for whom we have an e-mail address.  Therefore, we request readers to spread the word through their own particular Class; Branch; or friendship net that some Ex cadets, in particular, may be missing out on being connected to the Club and the College.  Those wishing to update their address’s (snail & e-mail) are requested to contact: rmcclub@rmc.ca

The eVERITAS electronic Newsletter reaches over 5,000 readers . It is a service provided by the RMC Club for Members in good standing with current addresses in the data base.  It is designed to provide timely information on current events at RMC and to keep Members "connected".  Occasionally, it will be distributed to non-members to entice them to join or renew their membership.  Membership information is available at www.rmcclub.ca

Newsworthy articles from national or local papers that may not have been available to the majority of our readers may be reproduced in e-VERITAS.  We will also publish articles in either official language as submitted by Cadets and Staff, on "current life" at RMC.  Other short “human interest stories" about Cadets, Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff at the College will appear from time-to-time.  Readers of e-VERITAS are encouraged to submit articles in either official language to william.oliver@rmc.ca.  In particular, up-to-date “Where are they now?” articles on Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff would be most welcome.

eVERITAS is intended as a supplement and not a replacement of Veritas, the highly popular magazine of the RMC Club printed and distributed three times a year to Members by mail.
