Quotation of the Week

“I divide my officers into four classes; the lazy, the industrious, the clever, and the stupid.  Each officer possesses at least two of these qualities.  Those who are clever and industrious are fitted for the highest staff appointments.  Use can also be made of those who are stupid and lazy.  The man who is clever and lazy, however, is for the next highest command.  He has the temperament and the nerves to deal with all situations.  But whoever is stupid and industrious is a MENACE, and must be removed immediately.”

General-Baron Von Hammer Steiner-Equord;
(an excerpt from The Marker, page 5, 13 May 1958.)

Pistol Shooting Still Alive at RMC!
by 23518 IV Year Jesse Olson

Officer Cadet Jesse Olsen holding the Free Pistol in firing position at one of the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) ranges in Ft. Benning, GA.  Over the course of a match, he would raise, hold and release a shot in this position over 100 times.
This includes practice raises with or without dry firing, sighting shots, and 60 match shots.

Over reading week and for one week in March I had the opportunity to attend a number of shooting competitions with the assistance of the RMC Athletic Department and the RMC Foundation.  I started shooting in first year with the varsity pistol team and continued until the end of the team in 2005.  This new skill and past time that I had learned was not something that I wished to stop doing and so I continued shooting on my own time.  In 2004 I earned the chance to shoot at the US Intercollegiate Pistol Championships in Fort Benning, GA.  Having missed the chance in 2005 to repeat this experience, I set this as my primary goal for my shooting while I was at RMC.  Now a member of the CISM shooting team and training with the Ontario Junior Team, I was able to train and improve my skills during the fall semester.

The first step was the sectional qualifiers held at the United States Military Academy, 17-18 Feb.  My goal was to obtain an individual invitation in at least one event, either free, air or standard pistol.  I had already been training on my own air pistol but hadn’t shot the other two events in some time.  The West Point coach, LTC (ret.) Duston Saunders, was gracious enough to lend me a free and standard pistol to shoot the events.  I figured my best chance at an individual invitation was in Air Pistol.  This meant that I need to shoot in the top 30 shooters in the US.  As an international invitee I would not take one of those 30 spots from an American but would be invited as a “31st” as long as I shot above the 30th place shooter.

On behalf of the Class of 2008, I would like to thank RMC for the excellent support of our Food Drive for The Partner's in Mission Food Bank. The food collected at the college gave the project an incredible head start on our way to collecting over 14 000 pounds of food by the day's end.

The winner of the $50 Tim Horton's gift certificates is:

RMC Cleaning Services, who was able to raise 5 large boxes of food.

The winner of the Pizza Party is:

Looking Back: Major Danny McLeod First Leader of CIAU (now CIS)

(click on picture for larger view)
THE UNIVERSITY CUP following the first championship game, which was played at RMC and won by McMaster University in 1963. This Cup is awarded annually to the CIS Men’s Hockey Champions. The trophy was presented by Queen's University of Kingston and the Royal Military College of Canada - participants in the first organized interuniversity hockey game played in Kingston in 1885 in recognition of the contribution made to the game of hockey by outstanding university players.

Danny McLeod was the first Secretary of the CIAU (now CIS) and virtually ran the organization
from his RMC office for about eight years.

Ed Note: Major McLeod designed the University Cup after another Cup called “Stanley”. As an aside, in recognition of his longtime leadership within the CIAU, a trophy was named in honour of Major Danny McLeod. The award is presented annually at the National Championship to the Most Valuable Player of the CIS Hockey Championship Tournament. The Selection Committee is composed of five members of the CIS Coaches Association in attendance at the Championship.

  We get e-mails . . .

Again, thanks for the time and effort you and his classmates put into honouring Chris. You all did a wonderful job.

Kind Regards,

Philip Moogk

I just want to thank you and Rolande for taking the time and putting all the effort into this publication.

I noted with some great sadness the passing of Chris Moogk, my old classmate from 58-62.

Many thanks for continuing to keep me on your email list. It has worked!!!! Or should I say that “Truth, Duty, Valour” have always been more than words to me…………so with that having been said, I have finally got off my butt and submitted my registration form to the RMC Club of Canada so that I will no longer feel like I am sponging off your kind attention when I receive a copy of e-V.

All the best and hope to see you again soon.

9735 Keith “RADAR” Wilson (RMC ’73)

Let me add my sincere thanks and congratulations for a superbly professional production of e-Veritas.  Although not an attendee of RMC itself, (in my day, Navy execs went to RNC Greenwich for the equivalent of 3rd and 4th years) I really enjoy the content of your publication.  A great job!

Our daughter is pictured on the "what's happening" page of this week’s news letter... (Sarah Rogers). Your weekly update keeps us in touch with her life at RMC. When I joined the Club, not as an alumnus, but as a parent, I did not expect this to be as interesting and informative as it is....Job well done...!! Thanks for helping us follow our daughter’s life at RMC,

On that note, do I owe you any membership dues...? I think I signed up for 4 or 5 years?

My memory is good but short..:-)

Best regards,

Neil and Judy Rogers

Ed note: We are pleased to confirm that the Neil and Judy Rogers are paid up until 31 Oct 2007.  Other parents & friends of RMC are also encouraged to join the Family & Friends Support Program (FFSP).  Information is available at http://www.rmcclub.ca/Membership.htm

We also appreciate the many Ex Cadets who recently renewed their Club membership and look forward to 17114 and many others to join them soon.

Bill and Rolande

We have reached the point in the year when we will be slowing up with our e-Veritas editions.  We expect to publish next week; miss the following week because of the Easter Weekend and then go at a two for three week pace up until Graduation Weekend.

We haven’t made up our minds following Graduation but the tennis courts; traveling and grandchildren beckon.

The eVERITAS electronic Newsletter reaches over 5,000 readers . It is a service provided by the RMC Club for Members in good standing with current addresses in the data base.  It is designed to provide timely information on current events at RMC and to keep Members "connected".  Occasionally, it will be distributed to non-members to entice them to join or renew their membership.  Membership information is available at www.rmcclub.ca

Newsworthy articles from national or local papers that may not have been available to the majority of our readers may be reproduced in e-VERITAS.  We will also publish articles in either official language as submitted by Cadets and Staff, on "current life" at RMC.  Other short “human interest stories" about Cadets, Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff at the College will appear from time-to-time.  Readers of e-VERITAS are encouraged to submit articles in either official language to william.oliver@rmc.ca.  In particular, up-to-date “Where are they now?” articles on Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff would be most welcome.

eVERITAS is intended as a supplement and not a replacement of Veritas, the highly popular magazine of the RMC Club printed and distributed three times a year to Members by mail.
