Quotation of the Week

"W“We are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then, when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show that we were right. Intellectually, it is possible to carry on this process for an indefinite time: the only check on it is that sooner or later a false belief bumps up against solid reality, usually on a battlefield."

That's from George Orwell's 1946 essay "In Front of Your Nose."

Danny McLeod, Update

Dear Friends:

Kind messages keep coming in and I would like to reassure everyone that Danny is coming along fine.  His heart is behaving reasonably well and he has been given the go ahead to have Prostate Surgery sometime in May.  We now go out occasionally to Loblaws and have a little stroll around, being careful not to overdo it.  He has been to church the last couple of Sundays and is in good spirits and behaving himself very well.

Thanks to all who have been so interested and caring.

Cheers,

Sheila for Danny

What's Happening Around the College?

22023 Capt. Nicole Armstrong

22023 Capt. Nicole Armstrong (RMC ’01) won second prize for the best paper award at the recently held Applied Computational Electromagnetic Society (ACES) annual conference in Miami, Florida. Capt Armstrong’s paper is based upon her MASc thesis research entitled, “Investigation of the Electromagnetic Interference Threat Posed by a Wireless Network inside Passenger Aircraft”.

This is a prestigious conference involving over 20 countries, and RMC placed ahead of tough competition

from Ohio State, UCLA, Toronto and McMaster, losing only to Mississippi.  Well done, Captain Armstrong!

"Capt Nicole Armstrong would like to acknowledge the contributions of her thesis supervisor, Dr. Y.M.M. Antar, the research sponsor, Serge Couture, and her husband, Capt Justin Armstrong.  This award would not have been possible without the advice and encouragement from these important people."

The Winds of Change
By:  IV Year 23499 Officer Cadet Bill McEwen, Past President, RMC Sailing Club

Four RMC cadets all set to compete at a Regatta last April in SUNY Maritime,  New York City.
Pictured are: JF Romain, Art Halpenny, Bill McEwen and Mike Lapointe.

The RMC Yacht Club is one of the oldest clubs in the college’s history.  In the past, cadets have represented the college throughout Canada and most of the Eastern United States.  They competed against teams from every major university including Queen’s, McGill, York, our sister military colleges in the US, and all of the Ivy League schools.  In fact, RMC was a team to be feared out on the water and even has a regatta in the American circuit named after an ex-cadet (LCol Leroy Grant).

Somewhere along the way funding and interest dropped off.  The club lost all of its dinghies and was left with four keelboats.  Four years ago, when this writer arrived at the college, the membership of the club was primarily staff or faculty with virtually no cadet participation.  The avenues to carry on in any competitive environment were very limited.  The only way a cadet could race a sailboat was to do so on a keelboat against local clubs.

Most cadets that have an interest in sailing competitively come from the sea cadet system where dinghy sailing is paramount.  In fact, most of the Olympic class boats are dinghies.  When RMC was at its prime in the collegiate sailing world it was in dinghies, and even today most competitive collegiate sailing is done in this type of boat.

After two years of hard work, a select few cadets helped to re-establish RMC in the collegiate sailing world.  The college is once again a proud member of the Inter-collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA), in the Mid-Atlantic division.  We are now a part of the RMC Yacht Club and

receive funding through them.  We have an executive committee that organizes our competitions as well as our fund-generating activities such as Learn-to Sail clinics.  To solve the dinghy problem the Executive began a relationship with the Sea Cadets.  The Sailing Club now uses eight of their dinghies in order to practice for and hold regattas.

In the spring of 2005, four members of the team attended RMC’s first inter-collegiate regatta in New York City on the East River.  Since then we have sent teams to four other competitions in New York, New Jersey, and right here in Kingston at a Queen’s hosted regatta.  For the 2006-07 season we have another five regattas scheduled, mostly in upstate New York.  If you would like to keep tabs on the team check out www.collegesailing.org/maisa to see our past results and future schedule.

We are a fledgling team that still has much to learn about sailing competitively at this level but we are improving.  In early April 2006 we will be presenting a proposal to the Athletic Department and RMC’s Unit Fund committee to purchase a number of drysuits and some team polo shirts.  The drysuits will allow us to make the most of our limited season and the polo shirts will allow us to look professional at formal events.

The first executive turnover took place in January 2005 and the leadership looks solid.  Currently there are 10 members and the team is looking to increase this number.  This writer can only hope that all the work put into the resurrection of this team was not in vain and that the RMC sailing team is here to stay.

Ex-Cadets In The News!

Two Engineering Ex Cadets (1970 &’78) Honoured by N.S. Lt. Governor

left, Terry Hennigar, P.Eng., President, A.P.E.N.S., 11837Dale Robertson RMC’78), P.Eng. , winner of the APENS Lt. Governor’s Award for Excellence in Engineering, Lt. Gov. Myra Freeman, 8596 Michael Topley, P Eng. (RMC ’70), 2nd runner up.

The ornate, gilt-edged Ballroom of Government House provided the ideal backdrop for a ceremony celebrating the best and brightest in engineering in Nova Scotia.  In one of Engineering Week’s highlights, Lieutenant Governor Myra Freeman recently presented the 2006 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Engineering.

Horner ADI Limited of Truro won honourable mention for revamping the Municipality of Barrington Sewage Treatment Plant.  For this project, Horner staff evaluated the existing facility and doubled its present capacity within strict time and money constraints.  Her Honour commended the company for its "new design that is much better environmentally, economically and from a public health point of view."8596 Michael Topley (RMC’70), P.Eng. President of Horner ADI Limited, accepted the award on behalf of the firm.  He thanked his project team, and Municipality of Barrington officials, for their support.

Her Honour presented the 2006 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Engineering to Enerscan Engineering Inc. and to engineer and President of Enerscan, 11837 Dale Robertson (RMC’78), P.Eng.  The small firm was celebrated for its innovative use of polymer-based hardware, instead of the standard metals and porcelain, for electrical distribution.

In accepting the award, Dale Robertson, P.Eng., said, "Developing new products in an industry that hasn’t changed much in 50 years is a team effort."  He

singled out Rick Barber,P.Eng., Mike Axler and Billy Livingston of his engineering team for special recognition.

After the ceremony, Robertson said his brother-in-law, a linesman, had inspired him.  "Basically, he was dissatisfied with the quality of the present hardware and he challenged me into coming up with a new solution.  So I thought about the problem, designed prototypes, conducted trials and, eventually, the result gained acceptance."  The entire process took Robertson’s team 15 years of trial and error, but Enerscan now has a growing repertoire of products that use the new technology.

Robertson said that getting the electrical industry to accept this innovation was difficult.  But gradually, the polymers – and Enerscan’s products – gained industry acceptance.

Today, Enerscan employs 30 people with revenues doubling each year and no signs of slowing down.  As Robertson says, "We have momentum now.  Our future is fantastic."

After the ceremony concluded, Lieutenant-Governor Freeman invited attendees to join her for light refreshments.  Those attending mixed, mingled and congratulated the award winners.

Well done - Dale & Michael!

REUNION WEEKEND GOLF TOURNAMENT NEEDS AN ORGANIZER

Steve France:  Looking for a golfing leader!

13731 Steve France (RMC 82) Executive Vice President of the RMC Club / Foundation is looking for an organizer and a few committee members for the Second Annual Golf Tournament which is held on the Friday, Reunion Weekend.  Last Year 8469 Jim Simpson and 8468 Bill Simmons both from the Class of 1970 were the committee and did an outstanding job in setting the standard for what has the potential to be a big and enjoyable part of the Weekend for many Ex Cadets.

8926 Ray Hook (RMC ’71) at one time indicated he might be able to help out with the tournament

but because of work related commitments in his new position, Executive Director, Brigantia Place, Camrose, Alberta, Ray has had to reluctantly withdraw his name.

Expectations are that the majority of the golfers will come from the returning classes: 56; 61; 66; 71; 76; 81; 86; 91; 96 and 2001.  One would think from all these Classes there are a few golfers (leaders) who will step forward.  For more info, please contact Steve France steve.france@rmc.ca or toll free 1-888 – 386-3762

Cadets with broomsticks!

I think you may have mentioned the story at some time in the past, but now I'm coming clean as one of the clandestine photographers who actually recorded the event.  The story is as follows (as published by Alan Burke on the Class of 66 site)...

Skylark
Sequestered FN's

by: 7316 Barry Taylor (RMC 68), Victoria, BC

During the spring of 1964, following an attack on an armoury by the FLQ and about the time of the Cuban missile crisis, all of the FN Rifles (minus breech blocks) disappeared one Friday night from the cadet rooms.  Saturday morning, some enterprising cadets showed up for 'punishment' parade carrying brooms instead. I believe there was some fuss about some tourists having taken photos of that event.  On the following Sunday (might have been Monday) at lunch in the Cadet Mess, the Commandant made an appeal through the CWC for the perps to come clean by the end of the day - else he was going to have to call the Minister of National Defence.  Shortly afterward, the rifles were 'found' stored safely in the basement vault of Fort Haldimand.  Rifle locks were installed in the cadet rooms shortly afterward.

Unfortunately I missed my opportunity for a nation-wide photo credit, as the Public Information Officer (Len Kubas, as I recall) read the riot act to anyone who photographed the "event" and was considering a journalistic initiative.  Now, forty-two years later, I am revealing this historic photo!

Please pass on my greetings to all my buddies who participated in this Extra Drill session under the "tutelage" of CSTO Bruce McLeod, Class of 64.

Although I have a lifetime membership to the Ex-Cadet Club and read every issue of Veritas, it saddens me to see that writers for Veritas see people with other views as "free-loaders", "cherry-pickers" or "people lacking a rational to be understood".  I am proud of my RMC heritage and what the College has given me.  However, it is not my place nor yours to judge why some people want to be part or not of the Ex-Cadet Club or why/how they renew their membership.

Maybe better funding drive/functions would be more appropriate!  Sponsorships even!

Just my two cents!

17256 Luc Sabourin (RMC’90)

You and Rolande do an incredible job with e-Veritas.  I want to thank you especially for your updates on Danny McLeod.  As I reflect on my own experiences and the great people I have met and admired over the last 40/45 years, Danny McLeod for sure resides in that top tier.  I met him briefly at the 2004 Ex-Cadet weekend (40 years Class of '64) and unfortunately the circumstances and organization of the Saturday evening did not allow for much conversation.  The 'Old Brigade' of course was in a separate room and honouring old comrades and current friendships.  But I did find Danny in such robust good health and spirit that I felt very sure he would overcome his setback.  Your news has tracked his recovery, and your personal support assisted it, and it is great to see he has such good friends as you close at hand.

Seeing Chuck Vrana and Danny together in a picture I well recognize also brings back the memory of another quality person who I knew well and respected.

I want to send a personal note to Danny and would appreciate it if you could e-mail me his mailing address and telephone number.  I believe you had it on one of your messages, but I can't locate it.

All the best and thanks for your efforts, look forward to meeting you in the future.

Regards,

6321 Dan Szabo (RMC ’64)

I love reading the E Veritas.  I think it’s about the best way to communicate with those who have fallen out of touch with the College.  Once they have missed their Club dues for a few years, I think they are a bit embarrassed and this causes them to stay away!

Your emails are a low cost and excellent way to keep them on board.

Thanks for your efforts.

11623 John Carswell (RMC '78)

Thank you again for your efforts in creating E-Veritas.  I enjoy receiving it and keeping up with events at the college.  I am a Life Member of the club and frequently attend functions here in Halifax.

During my tenure at the college (96-00), I was a member (and part of the leadership in my 3rd and 4th yrs) of the RMC Pistol Team and I vividly remember the good times I had while competing with this team.

Until I read the recent version of E-Veritas, I had no idea that they had cancelled the program in 2005.  What a shame, but I remember some of the challenges had during my time and I'd imagine they didn't go away upon my departure!

I'm sure there are many ex-cadets who at one time shot for the team (those who actually earned their "Cross Pistols" on a regular basis - unlike some other members of the wing!) who would like to see a tribute article created.

Wondering if this is possible?

Thank you again for your great articles and your efforts to keep us all in touch.

I guess we can hold off on the Maple Leafs Stanley Cup Parade down Yonge Street one more year.  Thanks for e-Veritas.  I always enjoy reading through it.

Just a quick note. While waiting for my next meeting, I accessed and read the latest release of e-Veritas. What a great and interconnected world that we live in.  It was nice to quickly get updated on things around RMC.  I was especially pleased about keeping track on the Maj’s progress in the earlier editions. I just wanted to take the time to express my gratitude for all that you do… we too often reap all the benefits and ignore the efforts that go into an endeavour of this magnitude.  As well, I want to pass on my best wishes to you and Rolande.

Great job!!!!

Once again, we appreciated the support from Peter Dawe; the Club Executive and many readers who continue to provide encouragement for our efforts with e-Veritas.  You can demonstrate tangible support in two ways:  i) help us out by supplying timely articles and photos; and ii) for those who have not already done so - renew or take out a Club membership.  http://www.rmcclub.ca/Membership.htm

Just a reminder!  There will be no e-Veritas next week.  We are taking a few days of R&R combined with the Easter Weekend.  Look for us around the 25th April.

The eVERITAS electronic Newsletter reaches over 5,000 readers . It is a service provided by the RMC Club for Members in good standing with current addresses in the data base.  It is designed to provide timely information on current events at RMC and to keep Members "connected".  Occasionally, it will be distributed to non-members to entice them to join or renew their membership.  Membership information is available at www.rmcclub.ca

Newsworthy articles from national or local papers that may not have been available to the majority of our readers may be reproduced in e-VERITAS.  We will also publish articles in either official language as submitted by Cadets and Staff, on "current life" at RMC.  Other short “human interest stories" about Cadets, Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff at the College will appear from time-to-time.  Readers of e-VERITAS are encouraged to submit articles in either official language to william.oliver@rmc.ca.  In particular, up-to-date “Where are they now?” articles on Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff would be most welcome.

eVERITAS is intended as a supplement and not a replacement of Veritas, the highly popular magazine of the RMC Club printed and distributed three times a year to Members by mail.
