On Sept 15, 33 members of the entry class into CMR of 1956 celebrated their 50th anniversary at CMR in St-Jean.  During the TGIF they were admitted into the Old Brigade by Al Roberts.  At the end they paraded down to the Officer's Mess (most of them out of steps) main hall led by Lynn Moffat playing his Bag Pipe.

LA CHASSE-GALERIE 2006 (Update)

Three dignified ceremonies took place at Merrickville on Sunday.  First, Cy Drake, town crier made the “official welcome with a great “oyez; oyez; oyez”.

Second, Tim Armstrong representing those who handle the “stewardship responsibility” of the Rideau Canal waterways performed a native “safe passage” custom, which was spiritual in nature.

Third, Geoff Bennett made a presentation to Mr. Ed Bee Bee, to commemorate the upcoming 175th anniversary of the canal; the RMC paddlers donated $1,000 from their own pockets to the Friends of the Rideau.

Once the formalities were completed and right on schedule, the team departed Merrickville and headed towards Smiths Falls under clear skies but very heavy winds.

The total amount achieved has surpassed the 110k mark! (and still counting)

MEMORIAL TRIBUTE

Memorial Tribute - #3252 E.A. (Ted) Tromanhauser - RMC October 21, 2006

Members of the Class of “Royal Roads ‘50-’52, RMC ‘50-‘54”, together with Ted’s widow, have planned a memorial tribute at the College to be held on the occasion of the annual Harrier Race (and many other sports events) on Saturday, October 21st

Ted won The Greenwood Cup (awarded for the one-mile run) four years in a row and got to retain the Cup permanently.  In his Will, he requested that the Cup be returned to the College.  It will be awarded henceforth to the first-place female cadet in the Harrier Race.

An appropriate tribute to Ted will be delivered (and the Cup will be returned to the College) at the 0800 hrs Parade of the Cadet Wing.  At the conclusion of the Harrier Race (expected to be at approximately 1030 hrs) members of Ted’s family will present the Cup to the first winner.  The family, relatives, Ted’s classmates and friends attending this tribute will then gather for a reception/lunch at the College.

REUNION WEEKEND

FIN DE SEMAINE DES ANCIENS DU COLLÈGE MILITAIRE ROYAL DU CANADA

The Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) extends a general invitation to attend its annual Reunion Weekend celebrations to be held from September 28 to October 1, 2006.

The weekend’s full schedule includes activities for former RMC students as well as for the current student population and their families, friends and public.  Several events will take place including the Legacy Dinner, Red and White Sports Challenge, Old Brigade Dinner, RMC Club Dinner and Dance as well as the much anticipated and gruelling First Year Obstacle Course, a formal Badging Parade and the Arch Memorial Ceremony.

Brigadier-General Jocelyn Lacroix, Commandant of the Royal Military College, expands on the deep meaning of the weekend, saying:  “This will be a memorable experience shared by all cadets, College staff, ex-cadets, members of the extended RMC family and their loved ones.  It is important to support the RMC Club and Foundation by providing activities that allow graduates to renew acquaintances, learn about changes to the College program and foster their loyalty to their alma mater.  Reunion Weekend will showcase all aspects of College life with the precision and high standards that are the hallmarks of RMC.”

To view the dates and timings of these and other events for the Reunion Weekend, please visit www.rmc.ca.

On September 8, 2006, Concordia University announced that Roméo Dallaire, Canadian Senator and former General in the Canadian Forces, would sit as Senior Fellow at the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS), a research centre based at the university’s Faculty of Arts & Science.  Dallaire is widely known for having served as Force Commander of UNAMIR, the ill-fated United Nations peacekeeping force for Rwanda between 1993 and 1994, and for trying to stop a war of genocide that was being waged by Hutu extremists against Tutsis and Hutu moderates

(RMC ’60)

In September 2006, the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning, which is headed by General Alfred John Gardyne Drummond de Chastelain, RMC 4860, presented their Eleventh Report of the Independent Monitoring Commission to the Government of the United Kingdom and the Government of Ireland.

General de Chastelain is the former Chief of the Defence Staff, and was the Chief negotiator in the Good Friday Peace accords.  Since 1997, he has been head of the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning, which is responsible for ensuring the decommissioning of arms by paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland.

Ed note:  As most of our readers are well aware this is the same John de Chastelain who is a member and designated “Piper” for the 2006 LA CHASSE-GALERIE.

From time to time, E-Veritas will focus on an Ex cadet; former staff member; and / or a friend of the college. Articles will be reproduced in the language received and in most cases not translated.  We invite readers to submit articles to william.oliver@rmc.ca in the language of their choice.

Enjoyed reading the latest e-Veritas, as usual.  One of the items, amongst others, that caught my eye was:

"Not too many MPs have served in the military or know about the Army, and they make national policy and decisions that affect us,"…by 21928 Jean-Pascal Champagne (RMC ’01).

A graduate of, I believe the Class of '85 is now a member of parliament (Pierre Lemieux), who I know because his father Guy Lemieux was a classmate from 1962, and of course this would make Pierre an exceptional exception to the above rule.  Perhaps I've missed info on this in the e-Veritas, but if this is new I've attached some pictures of Pierre's recent signing in as an MP.

Pierre's Website is: www.pierrelemieux.ca

5552 Ernie Dueck (RMC ’62)

I noted with interest that this month’s flashback had a front page article written by the editor of the marker in 1964 Gord Reay.  Gord, who never sported more than a single bar while a cadet, went on to become a LGen and Commander Mobile Command.  He was active on the college debating team and well known by his classmates for the somewhat sarcastic tone of both his editorial comments and debating style.  (Perhaps that is why his real leadership talent went un-recognized by the staff!)  Tragically he was killed shortly after he retired in a mine accident while on duty with the UN.  An article on Gord would make interesting reading for your audience.

6643Jim Kempling (RMC ’65)

The officer named Juarez, being a reservist officer candidate, was under no compunction whatsoever to volunteer for Afghanistan.  He is certainly giving the wrong impression about this and I suspect, looking at his motives and reading between the lines, that he was simply having a hard time in combat arms training and was looking for an "out" of some sort that would appear to be honourable to him and his family.

The one thing that we used to ensure in the Armour School was that any officer that wanted out, was shown the door fairly quickly for obvious reasons so I am not clear why it took any time at all to relieve him of his training responsibilities.

I am hoping that the Veritas readership is completely aware that Regulars volunteer but once for anything (by signing on) and Reservists need to volunteer twice (once to sign on and once again for overseas
commitments).

I was 27 years Regular and 13 years Reserve.

10218 Paul Crober (RMC ’74)

Well, I was sure I had won the e-Veritas trivia prize this time!  As I recall, the Class of 65 also had two RMC commandants in its ranks:  6496 Charlie Emond and 6719 Michel Matte.

In addition, our Class may be one of a kind (or a few) for having provided commandants for all three CSCs, viz. 6640 Tony Goode (RR) and 6496 Charlie Emond (CMR).  Charlie may be unique as having been commandant of two of the colleges.

Sorry I don't have the commandant service years for these stalwarts.

6439 Hugh J.M. Spence
Secretary for Life
RMC Class of 65

Ed Note:  We miscued again!!  Our regrets, to the distinguished members from the class of 1965.

For the record:  Charles Emond (yes, the same Charles Emond who has just been appointed to the RMC Board of Governors - read elsewhere in this edition) was Commandant at CMR 1991-94; and RMC 94-96.  Michel Matte 1993-94.

Tony Goode held the Commandant position at RRMC 1984-87.

For Hugh:  Our records show Tony’s college number as 6440!

Sunday evening, I had a wonderful visit with an old friend of my family's, MGen Elliott Rodger, age 98.  From your listing of graduates:

1924 1814 MGen (Ret'd) Elliot N Rodger CBE, CD 1924 RMC RMC Ordinary 4/30/2007

I am curious as to whether he may be the oldest still living WW II Canadian General, and also curious where to turn to find out more about his role in the war.  I believe he turns 99 this fall.

Any pointers you can provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks

The eVERITAS electronic Newsletter reaches over 5,000 readers . It is a service provided by the RMC Club for Members in good standing with current addresses in the data base.  It is designed to provide timely information on current events at RMC and to keep Members "connected".  Occasionally, it will be distributed to non-members to entice them to join or renew their membership.  Membership information is available at www.rmcclub.ca

Newsworthy articles from national or local papers that may not have been available to the majority of our readers may be reproduced in e-VERITAS.  We will also publish articles in either official language as submitted by Cadets and Staff, on "current life" at RMC.  Other short “human interest stories" about Cadets, Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff at the College will appear from time-to-time.  Readers of e-VERITAS are encouraged to submit articles in either official language to william.oliver@rmc.ca.  In particular, up-to-date “Where are they now?” articles on Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff would be most welcome.

eVERITAS is intended as a supplement and not a replacement of Veritas, the highly popular magazine of the RMC Club printed and distributed three times a year to Members by mail.
