Quotation of the Week

"The mothers and fathers of America will give you their sons and daughters...with the confidence in you that you will not needlessly waste their lives. And you dare not. That's the burden the mantle of leadership places upon you. You could be the person who gives the orders that will bring about the deaths of thousands and thousands of young men and women. It is an awesome responsibility. You cannot fail. You dare not fail..."

General H. Norman Schwarzkopf

From a speech to the Corps of Cadets at West Point on 15 May 1991 by General H. Norman Schwarzkopf

LOST AND FOUND

Lost Camera in the venue where the Old Brigade Dinner was held on Reunion Weekend. The camera was owned by a dear friend who has a number of great “shots” from the Weekend that were sentimentally important to him.  It was an Olympus similar to the photo.

We are hoping who ever found the camera may have passed it on to someone and it is stored on a shelf in a drawer waiting for a call.  If you know the whereabouts of it, please contact Bill Oliver  William.oliver@rmc.ca   and an Old Brigade member will be a very happy person!

http://www.rmc.ca/geninfo/hotmap/index_e.html

The Symposium has been created to provide a unique venue for graduate students to present scholarly works on defence and foreign policy related issues in a public forum. The 2006 Symposium will include 2 days of presentation by 38 students engaged in the study of defence and security issues, and marks the one of the most successful turnout of student presentations ever.

Presenters come from a variety of academic institutions across North America, including the

Centre for Military of Strategic Studies (CMSS), Calgary, Dalhousie, University of Manitoba, McGill, Université de Montréal, Queen's, RMC, the Université du Québec à Montréal, the University of Regina, York University, Oxford University, as well as the University of Hawaii.

21394 David Sanscartier, (RMC ’99)  PhD Environmental Science

Each will be presented with the $5000 fellowship at the Fall Convocation,17 November 2006.

Well done David & Jared!

Investors Take Note . . .

Investors who hold appreciated stocks can now offer gifts of securities to their charity of choice and eliminate paying capital gains on their gift.  Effective May 2, 2006, donors can now donate listed securities, obtain a tax-receipt for the full market value of the gift, and be completely exempt for any capital gains tax.  The tax receipt is worth about $44 of tax refund for every $100 of shares, which can then be used to reduce the burden of taxes against other income—a win for both the investor and the charity!

If you are looking to increase your tax deductions prior to the end of this year, please be aware that the

physical transfer of stocks and securities can take as much as 5 business days, and must be transferred fully to the charity prior to the end of the year to qualify for a charitable tax-receipt against that year.

For more information on how you can make a gift of stocks or securities to the RMC Foundation, contact 13731 Mr. Steve France, Executive Vice President, RMC Club Foundation,

1-888-386-3762, or local to Kingston 613-541-6000 ext. 6697.

RMC Foundation Fundraiser

7076 John van Haastrecht, 6897 David Campbell, 6900 Yvon Côté and 7001 Harry Hamilton – all from the RMC Class of 1966 arrive at Panet House after 1 ½ days of battling the elements (unrelenting rain storm & heavy head winds) to raise $$$$ for the RMC Foundation.

Four very fit and determined Ex Cadets cycled from Ottawa to RMC using mostly back roads through unseasonably bad weather including strong head winds and heavy rains over a day and half to help celebrate Reunion Weekend 2006. The challenge and grind was well worth it though as this hearty quartet from the Class of 1966 raised over $25,000.00 in support of the RMC Foundation.

Three of the four are experienced cyclist while John van Haastrecht is considered a neophyte at best. At times during the rugged journey, John was convinced that his three other riding companions were really assassins, hired by his wife to take him out.

As shown in the picture above, all four arrived safe, sound, and a great example of TDV.

Great effort from the boys of ’66!

On the unanimous advice of the distinguished military historians of the Valiants Foundation, fourteen valiant men and women have been chosen to be honoured for their heroism. Their statues or busts will be placed on Confederation Square in Ottawa. The members of the Valiants Selection Committee included: LGen (Ret'd) H22547 Charles CH Belzile (Honouary member Class of 1952); 8008 Doctor Serge GLA Bernier (RMC ’69) and 5105 Doctor Jack JL Granatstein (RMC ‘61).

The Valiants include General Sir Arthur Currie, KCB, GCMC, DSM (1875-1933) - A courageous and innovative officer, he helped plan the great victory at Vimy Ridge. Then, as the first Canadian commander of the Canadian Corps, his brilliant leadership produced the sweeping Canadian victories of the war's Last Hundred Days.   We get e-mails . . .

You are absolutely correct in prodding me for a membership!  I should and I will.  I've been meaning to for a long, long time but between the PEO, OIQ, ASPE, NCGBA, ASHRAE and BOMA (these are all associations I belong to and for which I volunteer much time!), I never got around to being a real ex-cadet.  I definitely will step up and join.  Thanks for the reminder.

15884 Joel Primeau (RMC ’87)

Joel, thanks for stepping up – very much appreciated.

We have been prodding a number of eligible members of late – many like Joel have provided support by taking out or renewing their membership to the Club.

We very much appreciate the support.

Les East didn’t win the bugle while he was at RMC but he is still winning T&F medals 43 years after graduating.

I was so pleased to see the submission re the Brodeur father-son successes in Masters Track & Field in the recent VERITAS.  Little did they know they had another Ex cadet already in the Victoria T&F club.

Reflecting back 43-odd years I was wondering what about the status of the T&F Bugle.  The bugle was won by amassing the most points during the day's competition. If you won the bugle three years in a row, the bugle would be renamed in your honour. I won the Bugle in my 3rd year but lost it in my final year to recruit Adams in 1961/62.   "Roadents" or CMR types did not have a chance, as they were only present at RMC for two years.  Only four-year RMC cadets were in the "running".  The renaming of the Bugle looked like a good possibility - from the then, "Rainie Bugle", to perhaps the "Adam's Bugle" ... except for the appearance of Super Star Dave Dorman in the Fall of '62.

Danny McLeod may remember a day in the Spring of 1962 when, after I had watched the Ontario High School T&F championships at Queen’s one Saturday, I approached him in his office & suggested the College should go after this outstanding T&F kid who had won all the events he entered. Dorman apparently did arrive, because when I met Adams years later, he confirmed the bugle was then the Dave Dorman Bugle.

Wonder what name it goes by now?

As an aside, I've recently completed Masters/Seniors T&F competitions at the Washington Seniors Games in Tumwater WA, the Port Angeles WA Senior Games, the Nevada State Senior Olympics, & the Huntsman World Senior Games in St George.

Any readers out there know what happened to the bugle?

Thank you for the latest issue, here below, and for your continuing work.

A question, if I may.  Whom do I approach within the RMC staff about obtaining archival photos of the now former RRMC?  I am looking for an annual photo of the cadet wing of that fine military college to better track down some classmates, and to display for posterity in my rather formal big law firm reception area.

I am looking for a photo of the entire RR cadet wing, not on parade, but assembled, with senior staff officers, in or about April or May 1988.  It would be a photo of cadets standing, arranged in rows on bleachers, with Hatley Castle in the background.

Kind regards,

16142 Jeff Smith (RRMC ’88)

Note to RR staff & Classess of ‘88, ‘89 and ‘90. The Rodent grads of 88 and 89 or the Rodents of 90(at Roads or RMC) you may have copies tucked away somewhere.

Anyone able to help Jeff?

I was thrilled to read about Guy Lemieux from Ernie Dueck’s e-mail in the last E-Veritas. I sent an e-mail to his son to get his e-mail address so I can get in touch with him. We were classmates from day 1.

Could you send me Ernie’s e-mail address? I last saw Ernie at one of our RMC reunions, Class of 1962, and it would be fun to correspond with him via e-mail.

Many thanks in advance!

Done!

Would you be kind enough to send me Art Wade's e-mail address.

I was in 4 squadron under his benevolent command and have a few questions for him.

Thank you,

3894 William Badger (RMC ’57)

Done that too!

Just a short note; Chuck Badcock kept me playing during all the injuries that I experienced during my RMC career, especially in fourth year.

6772 Bob Mason (RMC ’66)

Ex cadets who were around during the time that Bob Mason was playing football and basketball would be well aware just how much Chuck Badcock would have been instrumental in having him up & ready to compete.

I am working with Mike Bardon on a project in support of Mech Eng and am interested in artwork that has to do with the Cordite.  I know that Anthony Tucker has done a painting and is selling the prints in your gift shop (I have purchased two).  I have also heard that there is a retired gentlemen living in the Kingston area that has done a fair amount of art by the name of Larson, I believe he was the DCdts at some time.  I was hoping that you might know where I could find an email address to get in touch with either or both of these gentlemen.

Much appreciated.

All done!

The eVERITAS electronic Newsletter reaches over 5,000 readers . It is a service provided by the RMC Club for Members in good standing with current addresses in the data base.  It is designed to provide timely information on current events at RMC and to keep Members "connected".  Occasionally, it will be distributed to non-members to entice them to join or renew their membership.  Membership information is available at www.rmcclub.ca

Newsworthy articles from national or local papers that may not have been available to the majority of our readers may be reproduced in e-VERITAS.  We will also publish articles in either official language as submitted by Cadets and Staff, on "current life" at RMC.  Other short “human interest stories" about Cadets, Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff at the College will appear from time-to-time.  Readers of e-VERITAS are encouraged to submit articles in either official language to william.oliver@rmc.ca.  In particular, up-to-date “Where are they now?” articles on Ex-Cadets, Alumni and current and former Staff would be most welcome.

eVERITAS is intended as a supplement and not a replacement of Veritas, the highly popular magazine of the RMC Club printed and distributed three times a year to Members by mail.
