Biggest Career Highlight: Playing for the “Maj” –

West Point Thoughts/Observations:
These random thoughts cover the waterfront from
social to hard reality:
The ’68 Game
– ugly flashbacks – we were leading going into the
3rd period but lost 4-2.
West Point:
The “BIG” ice with no body contact: the new NHL
before its time!
Our hosts off-ice preoccupation with the Vietnam
conflict – all 4th year cadets would be “in country”
within 12 months of grad – the last 200 plus as
infantry platoon commanders.
To think that we considered our situation to be
tough!
Social:
When RMC hosted the game each player was responsible
for arranging a date for our West Point guest –
usually a friend of our date/girl friend and after
the Ball we congregated at the LaSalle Hotel for
further “sport”
When West Point hosted RMC, our dates were
“provided”:
–All RMC cadets were herded into the cadet canteen
–A lectern beside a closed door was manned by a
matronly lady who could have been a RSM in drag
–She would announce/order: would O/Cdt MacAuley come
forward to meet his date.
–As you walked across the room, in full view of your
mates & assorted West Point cadets, the door opened
and out “popped” your date
–Introductions were made as the two of you walked
back to a booth to order a burger & milkshake.
–The evening ended with a handshake when you dropped
your date at the on-campus hotel.
I’m still “playing” hockey – had the privilege to
play over the past three years with my son Kevin &
his 30 something mates. I upped the average age of
my line by 15-20 years every time I stepped on the
ice.
As Red Green says – “Keep your stick on the ice”

Just wanted to share my memories of the West Point
games. With Dennis Fodor, Jim Alkins and Barry
Bradshaw we came to RMC from Royal Roads (RRMC). We
didn’t have a varsity team in a league at RRMC and
being away from competitive hockey since we left
Ontario and Saskatchewan, we were worried about
making the team. We were thrilled to compete as
Redmen. We played in 1972/73 and again in our
fourth year 73/74. I still think of those friends
often.
We joined great players and friends during our time
there and the highlight was our two ties with West
Point. We had great players in Dick Mohns and Henry
Van Keullan, Bob Booth, Marc Ouellet, Larry Russell,
and of course Stevie Blanchard, Chris Ouimet and
Keith ‘Radar' Wilson as our seniors. Just to
mention a few.
As Rodents, we only played WestPoint twice. We
never lost! We were playing not only for RMC but
also, we felt, for the guys and tradition that had
gone on before. They were great, hard-fought games
and an experience; I will never forget with guys I
am proud to call my friends.
